Me and my fiancee come here regularly, because he is very picky about his Mexican food. He is Mexican, and he says it's the most authentic you can get here in Utah. We have gone everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE that serves Mexican food, and this is his favorite. I love it myself. The service is good. We prefer some waitresses over others, but we have never had a bad experience, and we will be going back. I'm getting hungry just typing about Al Sabor.

I've been coming for about two years and I have never been disappointed. From the mole to the chile verde it's all delicious

We have always enjoyed this place, but after tonight, we won't be back. Service was slow, order was wrong, chicken had bones, potatoes raw, just very disappointing...

Good and authentic Mexican food. I can't seem to get past the tacos portion of the menu. I've been here a few times and the food and service have always been excellent.

This restaurant is clean, well decorated and colorful so there is a lot to look at while you're eating. The waitress was nice, but overall she took her time getting the drinks, food, refills, the check, etc. They give you chips and salsa to start, but they don't refill them, so don't scarf them down like I did or else you'll just stare at the empty bowl with sad eyes. Needless to say the chips are really good. They are thick and fresh and super crunchy. The salsa is good, but it is quite spicy. I got the chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. I liked the rice, but it's a little weird that it has carrots in it. I also really liked the beans. The chimichanga was pretty small but tasted good. It has chicken and cheese on the inside and they smother the outside. The chimichanga being smothered is a good and bad thing. It's good because it adds flavor and makes it so it isn't dry. It's bad though because I didn't get any of the crunchy goodness of a chimichanga. My husband got the fish tacos and they weren't great. They give you 2 tacos with tilapia that is breaded and tastes like it was frozen for a long time. The price is a little high for the amount of food.

If clothing makes the man, salsa makes the Mexican restaurant! And Al Sabor has AMAZING salsa! Unfortunately, the chips are served in TINY (6" X 4") baskets that contain 8-10 chips. Seriously, 8 chips for a party of 3? The taco plates that we ordered were delicious. The plating at Al Sabor is attractive and colorful too! I would have given 5 stars if there weren't a few areas where they seemed to be skimping--Chips, napkins, towels to dry hands in the restroom, etc.

Excellent fresh homemade Mexican food. The inside is so festive worn unique carved benches with day of the dead, Frida, and Hispanic folk lie carved on them. The tortilla chips are amazing and we haven't tried a Mole we haven't loved. Unfortunately the outside of the building resembles a fast food restaurant (which this is anything but) which I believe allows people overlook it, if you're in the area don't overlook this place, you'll be glad you paid attention and your taste buds will thank you.

We have been looking for good Mexican food in the Salt Lake valley and finally found an excellent one, thanks to a friend's recommendation. The chips and salsa were great, always a must for us. Rice and beans also really good. We had the al pastor tacos which were one of the best we've ever had. Nice atmosphere and friendly, good service. So glad to have found the good Mexican food like we had in Southern California.

I was really excited to try this place and since it had some reviews on here I wanted to see for myself! OK 1st off we were seated in a terribly wobbly table but we were just careful so the water glasses didn't tip over! ha ha! The waitress was so slow and we had to wait forever for our food! She was visiting with another table the whole night! She gave us chips and the chip basket I promise has no more than 10 chips in the basket! Since we were hungry and it was taking soooo long for our ordered meals to arrive we asked for another basket of chips! The waitress informed us that we would be charged for additional chips after that one! FAIL!!!! My husband ordered the signature mole combination plate and I got a Chicken Enchilada plate w/ mole sauce. Let's start with my hubby's order. He had 5 small bowls of a variety of mole and that came with 2 small corn tortillas and a tiny plate with less than 1/2 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of beans. The rice was OK but the beans tasted like wallpaper paste! Seriously bad stuff! His moles out of the 5 of them 2 of them looked separated like they hadn't been warmed thru and stirred the water was seperated. Only 1 of them had any visible meat in it and it was about 1 to 2 ounces of shredded chicken. Needless to say he was disappointed in his meal. I ordered chicken enchiladas with a mole on top and I was taken back when the meal was placed in front of me! It was 2 little enchiladas wrapped in corn tortillas w/ mole. I was excited for the mole but after 1 taste I was so sad! It was a syrupy sweet sticky sauce...tasted like blended up raisins! It was so sickly sweet that it was hard to eat. The inside of my chicken enchiladas had pockets of cold in it like it wasn't warmed thru properly! Our waitress basically ignored us until it was time for us to leave and only came to our table because my husband got up and walked out to the car while I waited to pay! Terrible service, lousy food....we certainly will NEVER be back to this place! It's very rare that I find a place that I cannot say anything positive about but Al Sabor has done that! If you want good mole here in Salt Lake it's worth the trip downtown to Red Iguana! The service at Al Sabor was TERRIBLE!

Cute, well decorated, and authentic - with mole to rival "that one place" down town. The carnitas are great, the parking is ample- great if you're in the area. I will have to come back when the patio is open.

Love the decor. As for the food and service, not so much. I got one each of their tacos, and the person I was dining with had the chicken taco salad. Both our plates were bland. The prices were much too high for the quality of food, and amount. As other review state, chips are served in tiny boxes. Yup, we got 8 chips. The salsa was ok, but our server got frustrated when we kept asking for more. Speaking of our server, we felt bad for her. Management obviously has no clue, because it was peak lunch time, and our server was the only server for the entire restaurant. That's poor staffing. We had to wait a good 15 minutes to order. That should have been a clue to leave and find a better place to have lunch. I was hoping to like the place, but I have no desire to go back.

Ok, overall good food, good atmosphere, small portions for everything. Don't eat to many chips, too quickly. The chips and salsa they bring out is very small portions. The dinner was priced a little high for the portions for the price. I think there was only one waitress, that was the hostess, cashier, waitress... On a Friday night. So as a result we received very poor service, water was never refilled, chips never refilled, had our silverware delivered to us about 5 minutes after staring at it with no fork. We told her before the food was put down on the table. Yet she took orders from two different tables before bringing us our silverware to eat our food. So bring your own water, chips, salsa, and silverware.

A little pricey for the portions you get. I had a combo that came with a chili relleno, but I guess they ran out of them? Anyways they substituted a fish taco instead. I have had better fish tacos at Rubios. I'll stick with La Hacienda for chili verde. The décor is very nice and the chips and salsa are very good. Everything else was decent, but I don't think I would go back.

The waitress was nice and very helpful, and the complimentary chips and salsa was very good. I'd deffinetly come back.

Slow service, slow service but the service is slow. No beer , but the yelp said they had beer. Stingy with chips and salsa. We had 12 people in our group, so we sampled most of the menu. Chimichangas were good, chili verde burritos were good. Mole was good. Good food , poor everything else.

I hate to give this place a 1 star review because the food was really good. The poor service we experienced outweighs the food. There was one other 2 person party when our party of 4 walked in, so there shouldn't have been any problems receiving service. They were slow getting water to us and it took a very long time for us to get the check. Up to here I would have given this place 3 stars, but here is where it gets sketchy. After taking too long to take our credit cards, we went up to the register to pay. Other parties seemed to have no problems paying for their food. However, when it got to us, they said that their card reader wasn't working. They said that they will write our credit card numbers down and pay for our meals later. I've never had any store or restaurant ask for our info before. We asked them not to write our information down but the waitress took our card to the back for 15 minutes and when she came back, she said that we paid for our meal. We asked how and she said they tried again on their Square reader and it worked. So then when we asked to sign to approve the transaction or for our receipt, they said they don't have receipts for orders over $25 and rushed us out of the door. It all seemed so sketchy. We went to Village Baker for some sweets and checked our credit card transactions online. The payment from Village Baker already showed up, but Al Sabor didn't. Hours later, still no transaction. It was all handled very poorly and seeing how the restaurant handled money very unprofessionally I do not want to ever go back.

This restaurant has the nicest staff. They are attentive and respond well to special requests. Food is above average for a Mexican restaurant. The beans are well spiced and are flavorful, not bland. They fry their tortilla chips in house and they are crispy warm and delicious. Basically everything is good and authentic. My personal reco is the fish tacos. But carne asada, al pastor and moles are tasty too. It is rarely busy here so you can get in and eat quick. Great atmosphere. I highly recommend.

This is a quaint little restaurant. Sit down style which surprised me. Cute decor inside. Wonderful service. Start your meal with free chips and salsa. Salsa is a little on the spicy side but good flavor! Portion was not huge, just right. We both had chimichangas and the flavors were really good. A tiny bit pricey. I would recommend though. Good traditional variety.

Really good guacamole. Mole sampler was delicious. Docked a star because they were very slow, and they are stingy about chips, salsa, and tortillas....

I'll admit, I'm a picky person when it comes to new restaurants. I was worried it wasn't up to much even after the engineers from the office said it was tasty. We tried it Friday night and I was really happy. They make their own chips (as previously mentioned) and they are delicious!! Their salsa was great too- lots of ground pepper. My husband had the mole sampler- which we were excited to see somewhere besides Red Iguana- and they had a fine selection that stood up to the competition. Also, they brought more flour tortillas for him free of charge. The decor is very authentic and very clean. Here was the best part, my daughter got the tostadas and they had the most beautiful freshly washed thinly shredded lettuce on top of flavorful shredded beef. Very yummy. Definitely will go back. I gave it 4 stars only because I had to add salt to a few things, but that was my only complaint.

Came here at noon on a Friday, and we were the only group here. I got the tacos al sabor, which wasn't too bad. The pork and chicken was very good, but the Asada was fatty and tough. I might give this place one more chance, but it's a little off-putting as a diner when you're the only ones in the restaurant. It's in a good location, they just aren't getting the customers. Maybe this is more of a dinner place?

This was the worst experience ever!! I brought friends with me to try this restaurant and it was a disaster!! I liked it last time! We should have walked out from the start!! It took forever to get chips and drinks. My husbands glass was empty for a long time!! The food took so long that it was cold!! My husbands first bite was cold. My friend got her food and it was wrong, so she took it back. It took forever to bring back! When my husband mentioned his cold food she asked if he wanted her to warm it up! Yikes! No!! Take it off! They gave us two baskets of chips with like 10 chips in each basket for 8 adults... When we asked for more, she never mentioned that we have to pay for them!! In the end, they did nothing!!!! NOTHING! To make it right. Just said, "I'm sorry, but the plate was hot when I served it"!! The beans tasted like grease, the rice had no flavor and the rest was all downhill! Too bad!!!

This seems like a family business and that is a good thing here. Everyone seems to care and are very friendly! The place is nice clean! The food is really good. The fried tortillas and salsa were delicious! I had the fish tacos and my partner had the chicken chimichanga. They were both tasty.

I found this place by searching Yelp* for fish tacos. I think I would have enjoyed them more if they'd had cabbage instead of iceberg lettuce and some pico de gallo- the fish wasn't crunchy enough on it's own. My partner, however, had the best chili verde I've ever eaten. (We ordered a bowl to go it was so good!) The kids meal portions were large- more than my kids could eat. We loved the warm chips, and the salsa was delightful, just enough chunkiness to give you a good bite. The server was attentive, but the kitchen was slow. We were there well before dinner rush with only one other patron and it still took forever. I would definitely go again!

I'm having a hard time paying for the slop they called Mexican food here. I brought my wife here expecting decent food from the Yelp reviews but sorry it was bad. The service and decor were fine but the food was barely fit for a hospital cafeteria. The salsa had no flavor. The flour tortillas should be homemade at a place like this but they were no better than the cheap preservative - laden stuff you get at Walmart. The burritos I got weren't served with beans and rice like you would typically get. Taco Bell food has more flavor. My wife got chili rellenos. The breading on the bottom was so saturated with grease when it got to our table that it stuck to the plate. She took a few bites because we had paid $10.50 for them, but then she gave up. Between the two of us, we got one side of beans and rice. The beans were OK, but the rice had peas and green beans mixed in. Wtf? Most places deserve a second chance for little screwups but this place was egregiously bad. The food had no redeeming qualities and was WAY too expensive.

They have good moles and enchiladas. A little expensive but worth it. I included a picture of their enchiladas al sabor. 5 of their different enchiladas to try. It takes them a while to make the food so do not go if you are in a hurry. They also have a plate with all 5 of their moles. I tried a bit on the enchiladas and they will really good.

cute restaurant. i like all the colorful mexican chairs. the wooden booths are hard on your butt, though. husband ordered a combo and said everything was tasty and had a nice kick to it. i ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole poblano. i'm not a mole connoisseur. like most people in salt lake, we get our fix at red iguana so that's all i really have to compare it to. the chicken had no flavor. there wasn't any cheese inside the enchilada. just chicken. the mole was too sweet and floral for me (floral? hope that makes sense). i can't tell if it was homemade or not. i didn't really like it. don't get me wrong, i wasn't disgusted by my enchiladas, but they weren't my cup of tea. the mexican rice was tasty and the refried beans were delicious. prices were a little steep. the service and ambiance were great. i think the enchiladas were really the only downfall. they DO serve salsa in tiny cups which is weird because then they have to make a million trips to keep refilling, but if that's something they want to keep doing then go right ahead because the salsa was great and you're going to have to keep getting me more! presentation on everything was nice. service was lovely as well. all in all, it was fine.

Love this place! Been going here for a while now never fails. Enchiladas poblanas is my current go to dish but I've tried basically everything and it is very tasty!

Amazing!! Maybe the best Mexican I've had in Utah. Super high quality ingredients. Freshly made chips and salsa that are fantastic!

I drove by for a couple months, finally stopped in for a try. The staff was very friendly. We got our food fast. The chips and salsa was great. I had a combination plate and my wife had the chimichanga, they were both very good. Everything I have had was great. Give it a try!

Yummy! Mole is just as good as Red Iguana and no line out the door. Great decor and attentive staff! We are about to try the desserts! It is well worth the trip if it isn't close to home.

After reading the reviews on this site I was excited to try this restauran. I went there last night for date night. I ordered the fish tacos and my girlfriend ordered the steak fijitas. The restaurant is very cute and the service was very nice. Now for the food: my fish tacos came out and the talapia that was used is the frozen cilantro lime crusted from Costco. It's very good if you are eating at home but not if you are eating out. I was not pleased so and let my server know and she was great and offered to make me something else. Great, good customer service, so I explained to her that I do not eat any beef, chicken, or pork and that I will just have to go with the cheese enchiladas. The server said great one of their best dishes so I was happy again. Mean time my girlfriends fijitas came out on a plate but not a sizzling plate and after the talapia incident I question their freshness. She did not mind and said they were pretty good. The waitress shortly delivered my enchiladas. They looked great but a little lumpy. Sure enough they were chicken. That was the last straw I was done. I asked for the check and they charged me for both the fajitas and tacos. In the end the restraint is cute, food very poor, customer service poor. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are far better options out there.

I happened to drive by this restaurant when I was on a business trip to SLC, and decided to give it a shot for dinner. So glad I did! Very friendly staff and the food was awesome!! i returned there again on another business trip, got there late, about 10 minutes before closing, and even though they had closed the kitchen they still let me get something. (Had to pay cash as the register had been closed out). So accommodating and again so worth it. The Cochinita Pibil is amazing!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
